Meet Donya Keys, Principal of En Pointe

Winner of the ‘Best Dance Classes in York’ accolade for three years running, En Pointe Dance School & Studios is a successful York business that has grown significantly over the past six years and now has around 350 students and offers 80 classes a week.

The school's Principal, Donya Keys tells us more about establishing and running one of York's best dance schools.

About En Pointe Dance School & Studios

I established En Pointe six years ago, originally as a ballet only dance school. But it soon grew to over 200 students of all ages, and due to the demand for other dance styles, we started offering Jazz, Musical Theatre, Tap, Lyrical, Contemporary, to name a few.

Four years ago, I took on a large unit at York Business Park, to have purpose built dance studios and be able to offer the dancers of York the very best facilities to dance in, and a place for En Pointe students to call home.

We now have over 80 classes a week, around 350 students, and six fantastic dance teachers.

Highlights of running a dance business

I love the fact we offer high quality dance classes, in a professional environment, for the dancers of York. I am very proud of our studios, and the fact we offer the prestigious Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) exams every year and annual theatre performance for all students.

We are proud of winning the ‘Best Dance Classes in York’ Award by Little Vikings for three years running, and being named in the Top 3 Best Dance Schools in York, by Three Best Rated, for four years running.

Watching our students grow, develop, improve and successfully apply for auditions is definitely a highlight too!

Challenges

There are many different roles a studio owner and dance teacher needs to do, and at times it can be extremely hectic! But I do it, because I love it. I also teach elsewhere and I am an RAD teacher mentor, so I have lots going on. I also have two beautiful young children, and sometimes I find spreading my energy and sharing my time, very difficult.

Plans for 2019

We have already completed our annual RAD ballet examinations for the students, and we are now working on our annual show. This year, it is World of Dance, on 1 and 2 June at Joseph Rowntree Theatre.

We aim to continue to improve our high services to our students, and to grow our dance family this year too.

Our classes are for everyone - from walking one year old's to adults of all ages and abilities. Anyone is welcome to join at any time, and you can book trial classes on our website, with discounts available for siblings and multiple classes.
