Meet Janet & Cassie from Story Craft Theatre
Professional actors, Janet Bruce and Cassie Vallance have three children between them and joined forces last year to create Story Craft Theatre to help children discover and develop through craft and storytelling adventures.
Here, Janet and Cassie tell us more about their fantastic small business which provides children’s parties and delivers unique events in York and across Yorkshire, in theatres and schools.
About Story Craft Theatre
We run storytelling and craft parties for 3-7-year olds and host storytelling sessions every Friday at the York Theatre Royal for pre-schoolers.
We are both professional actors that love telling stories and working with crafts, so we decided to join forces and set up a business. We began our adventure in 2018 and it seems to be going from strength to strength.
There are so many fun things about running Story Craft Theatre, from creating different craft activities to writing shows, to making puppets. However, if we had to choose one best thing about running our business, it would be working with children’s imaginations; there is no limit on how much fun you can have!
Small business challenges
We are both parents and have three kids between us aged from 6 months to 3.5 years. We stay up late writing emails, creating costumes whilst breast feeding and having meetings in the park whilst the boys play.
We have supportive partners so we couldn’t do it without them but it just means that we have to work whenever we get the chance. Saying that, we are doing something that we love and our children get to enjoy our creations.
Plans for 2019
We have lots of exciting plans for 2019. We are discussing family festivals; an art centre tour and Story Craft pop ups in Harrogate.
Join our storytelling sessions
Every Friday morning between 10.15am and 11.30am, Story Craft Theatre hold crafting and storytelling sessions at the York Theatre Royal.
The sessions are designed around a brilliant picture book with interactive and imaginative play. The cost is £5 per child and there’s no need to block book, just pay at the box office on the day.
We also write a weekly blog, which you can access through our website. There’s lots of craft ideas and step by step instructions on how to make each one.
